Our Artist in Residence Series is a collaboration between a variety of talented makers and creatives and Spruce Point Inn. Each workshop will be truly unique, but all promise to be an interactive and fun experience that celebrates the arts, fosters creativity, and offers a hands-on education.

Rescheduled Artists in Residence Workshops

Coastal French Cuisine
A native of Orleans, France and a graduate of France’s CFA Charles Peguy School, Chef Olivier Gaupin developed a passion for fine food and wine at an early age. Gaupin followed his family’s heritage of fine chefs to pursue a career in the culinary field and has been sharing his talents throughout Europe and across the U.S. for more than 25 years.
In 2013, Gaupin was inducted into the Maîtres Cuisinier de France (Master Chef of France); one of only four chefs in the State of Texas to carry the distinguished title. In addition, he has received the Five Diamond Award from AAA, and has been noted in several publications throughout the U.S.
Chef Gaupin’s international career highlights include serving as Chef de Partie of the Michelin rated Hotel Negresco in Nice, France, serving as personal Chef for the Defense Minister in Paris, serving as Chef de Partie at the famed Hotel Stuva Colani in St. Moritz, Switzerland; in addition to, serving as a Private Chef for high profile yacht owners.
In the U.S. Chef Gaupin has led kitchens in some of the country’s most distinguished restaurants and hotels including Provence Restaurant under the leadership of Yannick Cam, the Pfister Hotel, The Ritz Carlton Hotel in Atlanta and St. Louis among others.

David Marx specializes in teaching landscape, travel and night photography. For the past two decades, David has taught workshops for the Rocky Mountain School of Photography, Glacier Photo Guides and at the Viewfinder Center for Photography.
David’s entertaining teaching style works well for photography students of all skill levels. David delights in helping others improve their landscape photography skills and he is an Adobe Certified Expert in Lightroom and in Adobe Photoshop.

Come join us for a five-day Coastal Maine Photography Seminar as we photograph the iconic landscapes and landmarks of the Maine Mid-Coast. Photographers of all skill levels will love the opportunity to learn from professional photography instructor David Marx as we explore the bays and harbors around the Spruce Point Inn.
Each day, David will lead the small group to carefully selected locations that highlight the unique beauty and character of the Maine Coast. The field trips will take you to gorgeous locations like the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, Ocean Point, the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and the Burnt Island Lighthouse. Spruce Point itself and the lobster boat docks of Boothbay Harbor will feature prominently in your excursions. Along the way, David Marx will discuss contemporary photography techniques and help each participant improve their work.
Presented September 19th -24th, our photography workshop package starts at $365 per night and includes five nights of accommodations, and the following for 1 participant: all meals, admission to designated area attractions, and seminar fees.
Optional enhancements are available if you would like to add an additional person to your reservation either as a full participant in the photography workshop (includes meals, area attraction admission and seminar fees) or to add an additional person onto your reservation who will join us for our meals and area attractions only.
For the safety of our guests, we'll ask that you provide you own transportation to the designated off property locations this year. David will provide detailed maps and driving directions for all our field shoots and carpooling will be encouraged but not required.

Photography Workshop Itinerary:
Sunday, Sept. 19th
The workshop will begin at 6pm with a photo shoot at the Spruce Point Inn’s oceanside pool and dock. We will move inside, after the sun has set, for a group dinner together and to discuss logistics for the week.
Monday, Sept 20th
We will begin our first full day with a brief series of lectures on photography fundamentals and essential camera techniques. At noon, our group will depart for a series of field shoots as we make our way over to the gorgeous Pemaquid Point Lighthouse for sunset.
Tuesday, Sept 21st
On Tuesday, you will get plenty of practice time and personal assistance, as we journey together over to the Maine Maritime Museum and other scenic spots in the Bath area. We will spend the whole day at various field shoot locations and will finish things off with sunset at the unique Doubling Point Lighthouse along the shore of the Kennebec River.
Wednesday, Sept 22nd
Wednesday will be another full day of photography fun. The highlights of the day will be our trip over to the expansive Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and a sunset field shoot from the tip of the Southport peninsula. David will sprinkle live demonstrations throughout the day to help you get the most out of your time at the botanical gardens and some of our other picturesque stops.
Thursday, Sept 23rd
Our final full day of shooting together will begin with an exclusive pre-dawn journey by boat across the harbor to the Burnt Island Lighthouse. We will have the whole island to ourselves for sunrise thanks to special permission from the lighthouse keeper! After a morning break, we will journey out to Squirrel Island and end the day with one more sunset shoot beside the ocean.
Friday, Sept 24th
Our workshop will end on Friday morning with a closing slideshow of participant’s work and breakfast together. Our program will wrap up by 11am with time for guests to check out of the hotel and bid everyone fond farewells.

In 2013, Steve and Johanna Corman founded Vena’s Fizz House, a cocktail/mocktail bar and mixology shop in Portland, Maine. Since then they have gained national acclaim for their cocktails and mocktails featuring bitters, tonics, spirits, syrups and “shrubs.” As seen in Food & Wine, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and CNN, the Cormans have delighted locals and travelers from afar with a mixture of nostalgic and innovative beverages prepared with simple, clean, and organic ingredients.

Watercolor Painting | June 15-18
Erica Qualey lives in mid-coast Maine where she works as a professional watercolor artist and illustrator. She has exhibited in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire and is represented in private collections throughout the United States and Canada. Recently, one of her paintings has been selected to be published in Splash 19, a yearly publication of watercolor paintings from North America. She has lead workshops for adults at Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, ArtWaves DMI on Mount Dessert Island, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deere Isle, Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, and other art associations. She has participated in visiting artist programs in public schools and has run art programming for children at Skidompha Library.

Poetry | June 19-22
Meghan Sterling is a published poet who has conducted poetry writing workshops up and down the coast. Based out of Portland, Maine, her work can be seen in Rattle, the Inflectionist Review, Rise Up Review, Balancing Act 2, Glass: A Journal of Poetry, Driftwood Press, Sky Island Journal, Literary Mama, the Mom Egg Review and others. Her chapbook, How We Drift, was published by Blue Lyra Press. She is Associate Poetry Editor for the Maine Review, Featured Poet in Frost Meadow Review’s Spring 2020 issue, a Dibner Fellow at the 2020 Black Fly Writer’s Retreat, and a Hewnoaks Artists’ Colony Resident in 2019 and upcoming 2021. Her debut full-length poetry collection, These Few Seeds, was released in 2021 from Terrapin Books.

Jan Van Haute
Chocolate | Sept. 6-9
A native of Belgium, Jan grew up in a country recognized worldwide for its artisan beer, chocolate and food culture. In 2007, Jan returned to Belgium to cook at three Michelin-starred restaurant Hof Van Cleve. Jan excelled in the high-pressure environment and was instrumental in creating outstanding cuisine using the best ingredients from around the world.
In 2009, Jan was appointed as the executive chef of the Ambassador of Belgium to the United States. In showcasing Belgian ingredients and fine Belgian cuisine, he elevated the dining experience in a diplomatic setting.
In December 2018, Chef Jan took the position as Executive Chef at Goodstone inn. Since then chef Jan was awarded with the the second spot on the list of 50 best restaurants in Northern Virginia (Northern Virginia Magazine). In 2020 he was nominated as finalist for Best Formal Fine dining in the DC metropolitan area (Rammy awards).
